The agricultural organization Asaja has calculated that the number of people hired for the fruit harvest campaign in Lleida, barring adverse climatic conditions, will reach approximately 20,000. This figure represents an increase of 6,000 workers compared to the previous year, when climate-related damage negatively impacted the harvest.
The forecasts from the president of Asaja Catalunya suggest that the total volume of contracts could reach 25,000, considering that many workers who start now will conclude their employment in October with the apple harvest in the northern region of Lleida.
These statements were made following the first meeting of the fruit harvest monitoring commission. The Minister of Agriculture, Òscar Ordeig, highlighted that production prospects are generally positive, despite some adverse weather events.
Fruit production in Lleida, which accounts for the majority of Catalan production, could reach 403,970 tons, a 14% increase from the previous year. The Government delegate in Lleida, Núria Gil, emphasized the consolidation and expansion of the accommodation strategy for seasonal workers, aiming for a more coordinated and dignified model.
The accommodation system for seasonal workers includes 11 facilities spread across the comarques of Segrià, Noguera, Pla d'Urgell, Urgell, and Garrigues, with a total capacity of 712 places. A notable new development is the new Center for Seasonal Worker Attention by the Lleida City Council in La Caparrella, offering 32 places. Additionally, the Seròs hostel will extend its continuous operation from May to September.
The Lleida City Council will also provide around a hundred places in pavilion 3 of Fira de Lleida and will utilize apartments from the Municipal Urban Agenda Company (EMAU) for emergency accommodation, as well as places at the Jericó hostel.
