The Pyrenees and the Lands of Lleida are preparing for one of the most singular astronomical phenomena: the total solar eclipse that will take place on August 12th, around 8:24 PM. The event will be particularly visible in the south of the province, concentrating in the regions of Segrià (especially in the Baix Segre area) and Garrigues, where the eclipse will be observed at 100% for about twenty-five seconds just before sunset.
According to Salvador Ribas, director of the Montsec Astronomical Park (PALM), it is one of the most spectacular phenomena we can observe in astronomy, occurring when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align and the Moon completely hides the Sun. Ribas assures that it is an event that impacts due to its uniqueness and unusual nature. In fact, since 1905 a total solar eclipse has not been visible in Catalonia, and another will not occur until the 22nd century. "This event makes it a unique occurrence that our generation will not be able to witness again, unless they travel to another part of the planet," explains Ribas.
The director of PAM mentions that the eclipse will not be visible from Montsec, so it will be necessary to travel to the south of the Catalan Congost, towards Baix Segre and Garrigues. Nevertheless, the Astronomical Park has dedicated the entire year to publicizing the phenomenon and the best viewing points. Several municipalities in the province of Lleida are already preparing the most suitable locations and the corresponding infrastructure to receive visitors. In Lleida city, two spaces will be set up: one at the Tucó de la Seu Vella (with a capacity for approximately 1,500 people) and another in the vicinity of the Els Magraners football stadium (with a capacity for about 12,000 people).
Additionally, several municipalities in Baix Segre and Garrigues are working to define the reference observation points for the eclipse, with special arrangements to welcome visitors and reminding them of the necessary use of approved special glasses for protection.
It should be noted that the Generalitat has created the portal eclipsicatalunya.cat, which daily updates activities, observation points, and news related to this exceptional event.
