On August 12, Catalonia will witness a solar eclipse, a phenomenon not seen in over a century. Although visibility will be more prolonged in Tarragona and the Terres de l'Ebre, the province of Lleida, particularly the Segrià and Garrigues regions, will have spots where it can be observed for approximately 25 seconds.
The eclipse will begin at 7:34 PM and conclude with sunset. The moments of totality, when the moon covers the sun, will be brief but intense. The Generalitat's Department of Research and Universities has established criteria for choosing the best observation sites: towns with over 3,000 inhabitants, where the sun is still visible at 8:30 PM, and where the eclipse duration is maximized.
Following these guidelines, the Lleida localities with the best visibility include the capital, Alcarràs, Almacelles, Torrefarrera, les Borges Blanques, Juneda, and part of Alcoletge. Other smaller municipalities with good visibility are Albatàrrec, Torres de Segre, Puigverd de Lleida, Artesa de Lleida, Soses, Gimenells i Pla de la Font, Arbeca, and Torregrossa.
In connection with this event, a political group has proposed to the Government that towns designated as observation points receive a grant of 30,000 euros. This aid would be intended to cover extraordinary expenses that may arise from public attendance. So far, Lleida and les Borges Blanques have been selected, meeting the safety and capacity requirements to host observers.
