The Lleida City Council plans a renovation of Galícia Square in the Mariola neighborhood to eliminate hard paving and increase green space and shade, as a measure to adapt to climate change.

The aim is to improve citizen comfort in the face of more severe temperatures resulting from climate change. The mayor of Lleida, Fèlix Larrosa, accompanied by the Commissioner for Public Space, Jordi Domingo, visited the square, where municipal brigades are already carrying out improvement works.
Currently, pavements are being repaired, the railing is being repainted, and a new railing is planned for a ramp to enhance safety. Tree stumps have also been removed and graffiti cleaned.
The mayor explained that the proposal is to “replace asphalt and tiles, and advance in green areas and trees, which is what generates greater comfort”. He highlighted that these renaturalization efforts “will help us provide more air, to breathe, and, above all, to provide shade for the summer”, which is especially important in the Mariola neighborhood where “people spend a lot of time outdoors”. Larrosa recalled that the future plan for Mariola also progresses in the creation of green and community spaces.
