The Ministry of Transport has awarded €15.8 million for safety works at the new Vila-seca interchange, ensuring the R-16 line's operational continuity.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through ADIF, has awarded a contract for €15.8 million to carry out safety installations for the new standard gauge interchange in Vila-seca (Tarragonès). This investment also covers new diversions at the Vila-seca junction.
This project will ensure that the section between Castelló and the Vila-seca node operates exclusively with standard gauge. The aim is to guarantee the continued operation of the R-16 commuter line, connecting Barcelona and Tortosa. From Tortosa to Vila-seca, the service will use standard gauge, transitioning to Iberian gauge thereafter.
The works also include the renewal of two railway diversions and the elimination of an existing level crossing, thereby enhancing the infrastructure's safety and efficiency.
