The temporary toll-free status of the C-32 in Catalonia this week, implemented to alleviate traffic chaos caused by the Rodalies suspension after the Gelida accident, has highlighted upcoming liberalizations. This measure allowed free travel between Barcelona and Tarragona (via El Vendrell) for several days.
The most significant change will arrive in November 2026 with the elimination of the toll on the AP-68, which connects Bilbao and Zaragoza. This route is considered one of the most expensive sections in the country for regular users of this important north-south connection.
Furthermore, a section of the AP-7 motorway in the Alicante area will also become permanently toll-free. This measure, approved by the Government, eliminates charges on the city's ring road after a trial period that began in 2024.
These actions are part of the progressive trend to suppress tolls as concessions end, integrating them as public use roads without barriers. This has already been seen with the liberalization of sections of the AP-7 and AP-2, allowing travel without payment between Tarragona and Zaragoza or Tarragona and Valencia, leaving behind former tolls like the one at Sagunto.
