The launch of the new electronic system coincided with the call of the cruise ship Viking Yi Dun, of Norwegian flag and aimed at the Chinese tourism market. This operation was the first of its kind in the city and was attended by the Government's sub-delegate in Tarragona, Elisabet Romero Álvarez, and the provincial commissioner of the National Police Corps, Alícia Vicente Tamames.
Authorities monitored the system's operation at the cruise terminal on the Balears quay. This technological transition replaces manual passport stamping with a digital and biometric procedure, representing a significant advancement in the efficiency and security of the port facilities.
During the day, officers processed the entry control for 759 passengers, predominantly from countries outside the Schengen area, making the call an ideal test for validating the new system. Concurrently, nearly 900 people embarked on new Mediterranean routes, while documentation for hundreds of ship workers was processed.
The implementation of the Entry/Exit System at the Port of Tarragona is part of a project driven by the European Union, supported by the European program 1/2024 IGFV. This program has contributed €310,210.48 out of a total budget of €386,126.98, integrating the port into a network of European digitalised borders.
