Heavy Rains and Hail Affect Tarragonès: 491 Firefighter Services

Monday's rainfall episode resulted in 491 firefighter interventions, primarily in Tarragona, and 30 medical emergency responses.

Severe rainfall and hail in Tarragonès on Monday prompted 491 interventions by firefighters, mostly in Tarragona city, which also experienced flooding and fallen trees.

Firefighters responded to 491 incidents from Monday midday to night during the heavy rainfall episode. The Tarragona Emergency Region accounted for the majority of these, with 434 interventions. In the capital of Tarragonès, the precipitation, accompanied by hail, caused flooded passages and other disruptions.
The Medical Emergency System (SEM) attended to 30 individuals related to the storms. Four were transported to hospitals, none in serious condition. These individuals were taken to Santa Tecla Hospital, Alt Penedès Hospital, and Vall d’Hebron Hospital.
The emergency number 112 received a total of 886 calls until Tuesday morning due to Monday's downpours. Approximately 70% (630) of these calls originated from Tarragonès, with 456 made from Tarragona city. Baix Camp was the second county with the most calls (109), followed by Barcelonès (28), Baix Penedès (23), Segrià (19), and Cerdanya (13).
Regarding rail transport, Rodalies (commuter rail) began Tuesday with normal service in the affected area. On Monday afternoon, train circulation was interrupted on several lines: the R14 between Reus and Tarragona, the R15 between Móra la Nova and Tarragona, the R16 between Cambrils and Tarragona, and the R17 between Salou-Port Aventura and Tarragona. Shortly before 10 PM, services resumed on lines R14, R16, and RT1.
The rainfall recorded significant accumulations, such as 88 liters in three hours in Vinyols i els Arcs (with 38 liters in just 30 minutes) and 77 liters in three hours in Tarragona (34 liters in 30 minutes). The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) also reported a wind gust of 117 km/h in Lac Redon.
The Tarragona City Council reported that the storm caused various mobility disruptions across the city due to water accumulation and fallen trees. The most affected areas include Cigonya street, Vidal i Barraquer avenue, the Francolí Industrial Estate, the Serrallo neighborhood, beach areas, the Entrevies Industrial Estate, the intersection of Torreforta and the C-31B, the Pont de Santa Tecla bridge, and the N-340 highway in Bonavista.
