The new plan, valid for five years, will reinforce Tarragona as a leading port for sustainability in the Mediterranean. It includes 27 objectives and 87 targets across three main areas: environmental sustainability, decarbonization, and social commitment.
Key actions include the electrification of quays, deployment of renewables, promotion of rail transport, ecosystem restoration, biodiversity protection, public awareness campaigns, and partnerships with the surrounding community. The document is considered dynamic and will be updated.
Rafael López Monné, Head of Sustainability, explains the port's aim to contribute to a sustainable human development model by combating climate change and supporting biodiversity. Cristina Miret, Head of the Environmental Division, highlights the need for a thorough review to incorporate new objectives aligned with the current global situation.
The environmental sustainability axis comprises 14 objectives, such as water efficiency, air and water quality controls, expansion of green spaces, ecosystem restoration, and transforming port urban areas into climate refuges. Actions like the transformation of the APT headquarters area into the new Parc del Port and the restoration of the Prats d’Albinyana have already begun.
Decarbonization, the second axis, focuses on emission reduction and energy efficiency. It includes promoting rail transport, green energy production, electrification of quays and cranes, and implementing a battery energy storage system. Projects like the installation of OPS at the Moll de Balears for cruise ships are already underway.
The third axis, social commitment, aims to deepen the port's connection with its environment through improved safety, support for at-risk groups, environmental awareness, and promotion of Mediterranean culture. New uses are planned for Tinglados 3 and 4, along with the production of traveling exhibitions.
