Salou has taken another step in recovering its agricultural heritage with the planting of 848 new grapevines at Pla de Maset, in Cap Salou. This initiative transforms the area into a wine experimentation center and a future public park for the municipality. In addition to reviving grape cultivation, walls, a dry stone hut, and historic paths have been restored.
The new vine planting expands the project initiated in 2024, adding 348 plants of the traditional pàmpol girat variety and 500 of the white escanyagòs variety. These two grape types, practically disappeared from the Camp de Tarragona, add historical and landscape value to the project. Pàmpol girat, specifically, stopped being cultivated in the sixties, and its original samples were recovered from the Finca El Encín in Alcalá de Henares.
The Pla de Maset park will be integrated into the municipality's green spaces system and officially inaugurated in the coming weeks. According to municipal sources, the initiative connects citizens with their history and collective identity, while also creating a new tourist product focused on nature and history. The goal is for it to become a large public park where visitors can learn about the history of viticulture and enjoy a Mediterranean forest environment near the coast.
The project also has a significant scientific aspect. In collaboration with the Faculty of Enology at URV and INCAVI, research is being conducted on the resilience of these vines in sandy soils. According to researcher Francesca Fort, the vineyard at Pla de Maset is an ideal laboratory for studying how these ancestral plants adapt to extreme conditions, comparing them with other experimental fields with beach soil.
Although the vineyard is young, a first symbolic micro-vinification is expected to take place in September using the fruit from the plants planted two years ago. This initiative joins other agricultural recovery projects in Salou, such as the production of olive oil from public spaces, as part of the strategy to highlight Salou's history beyond traditional sun and beach tourism.
