Salou, second Catalan city with fewest pensioners per inhabitant

Despite being the city where the number of pensioners has grown the most, Salou registers one of the lowest percentages in Catalonia.

The city of Salou, in the Tarragonès region, presents the second lowest percentage of pensioners per inhabitant in Catalonia (13.8%), according to Idescat data from 2025.

Although Salou has experienced the highest growth in the number of pensioners in Catalonia with 4.3%, its proportion relative to the total population remains low. This data comes from the contributory pensions statistics published by Idescat on June 22nd.
At the regional level, Terra Alta is one of the areas that exceeds 25% in the index of pensioners per inhabitant. This region, along with les Garrigues and Priorat, has also registered a decrease in the number of pensioners (-0.3% and -0.2% respectively).
The Tarragona regions of les Garrigues, Priorat, and Terra Alta lead the highest variations in the average pension amount. Les Garrigues leads with 5.7%, while Priorat and Terra Alta follow with 5.3%.
Regarding the average contributory pension, Tarragonès ranks second in Catalonia with 1,618 euros. In contrast, Terra Alta has the lowest monthly average (1,156 euros), followed by les Garrigues (1,225 euros) and Montsià (1,250 euros).
In municipalities with over 20,000 inhabitants, Esplugues de Llobregat leads with 23% pensioners. At the other end, Salou and Vila-seca, with 13.8%, are among the municipalities with the lowest percentages.
Amposta, the capital of Montsià, ranks third among municipalities with over 20,000 inhabitants with the lowest average pension, at 1,300 euros per month, behind Roses and Lloret de Mar.
The gender gap in pensions is notable in the Ribera d'Ebre region, exceeding 500 euros in difference. In les Garrigues and Terra Alta, this difference is smaller, with 216 and 241 euros respectively.
