The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) has launched a special mobility operation for the Sant Joan vigil, one of the nights with the highest volume of travel of the year. It is expected that between 12:00 PM and midnight this Tuesday, approximately 490,000 vehicles will leave the metropolitan area of Barcelona, many heading to towns in Tarragona.
Authorities anticipate high traffic intensity throughout the afternoon, especially between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. The main complications are expected on major road arteries, including the AP-7, a key route to the Costa Daurada, as well as roads connecting to tourist destinations along the coast.
As a notable measure, truck circulation will be restricted on the stretch of the AP-7 between Maçanet de la Selva and l'Hospitalet de l'Infant during the vigil afternoon. The aim is to improve traffic flow and minimize potential incidents.
Additionally, Traffic will impose speed limits of 80 km/h between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM on several roads in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, such as the C-31, C-32, B-23, B-20, and a section of the AP-7 between El Papiol and Martorell.
The security operation includes a significant deployment of the Mossos d'Esquadra (Catalan Police), with 286 traffic officers and 52 police checkpoints, supported by local police forces. The operation is complemented by speed cameras, variable message signs, and aerial surveillance to monitor traffic in real-time.
Traffic emphasizes the need for responsible driving, with zero tolerance for alcohol and drug consumption, and urges extreme caution due to the predicted high temperatures and the presence of motorcyclists and cyclists on the road network.
