The USOC union section within the Urbaser company committee has formalized a complaint with Labor Inspection concerning the working conditions of employees in Tarragona's cleaning and waste collection service. The union had previously urged the company to halt work due to extreme temperatures and a lack of safety measures.
Following a meeting with the company that did not yield the expected results for the workers, the complaint has been formally submitted to the Department of Labor. USOC union delegate Vicente Escudero explained that five cases of heatstroke among workers have already been recorded, requiring urgent medical attention.
Escudero regrets the company's lack of solutions and calls for work to be carried out under "regulatory conditions." Among the union's proposals is the adjustment of schedules, reducing activity between 12 noon and 5 p.m., a measure the company already applies on days with intense heat classified as orange or red by AEMET.
The USOC spokesperson notes that, although some morning shifts have stopped working at 12 p.m., shifts starting at 1:30 p.m. have continued outdoors. Escudero specifies that the entire staff is affected, whether by working in vehicles without refrigeration or on foot.
