The 2026 European Mobility Week (EMW) has concluded with a record 383 Catalan municipalities joining, representing over 86% of Catalonia's population. According to the Minister of Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition, Sílvia Paneque, "more than seven million Catalans have participated, through their municipalities, in this edition." Paneque highlighted that "this record figure indicates a growing awareness of the importance of having sustainable transport alternatives and public spaces designed for people."
This year's edition focused on intergenerational justice and the need to ensure accessible, safe, and sustainable mobility options for all ages. Across the territory, 490 activities were organized, including 87 walks, 55 bike rides, and 80 bike-related activities, alongside awareness campaigns and educational initiatives.
The Director General of Transport and Mobility, Susi López, emphasized that "sustainable mobility must be a real option for everyone, regardless of age, place of residence, or personal situation," underscoring the importance of continuing to transform public space and transport systems to make them increasingly accessible, safe, and inclusive.
EMW 2026 has consolidated the involvement of small municipalities, with 55 municipalities under 500 inhabitants joining. In total, 262 municipalities are between 500 and 20,000 inhabitants, 42 between 20,000 and 50,000, and 24 exceed 50,000 inhabitants. Participation was distributed by regions: Barcelona (153 municipalities), Girona (80), Lleida (78), Camp de Tarragona (49), and Terres de l’Ebre (23).
Minister Paneque noted that "the increase in participation, especially in smaller municipalities, demonstrates that sustainable mobility is a shared objective throughout the country." Additionally, municipalities reported the implementation of 1,532 permanent measures to promote walking, cycling, and public transport, and the organization of 100 car-free days.
This initiative by the Department of Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition continues to promote more sustainable, safe, healthy, and inclusive mobility in Catalonia.
