The Tarragona Chamber of Commerce today demanded that commercial establishments open on Sundays and holidays to capture spending from the 30,611 cruise passengers expected to arrive in the city this year.

The Tarragona Chamber of Commerce made its demand public based on cruise arrival data. This year, eighteen cruises are expected on Sundays (24,083 passengers) and five on holidays (6,528 visitors), totaling 30,611 cruise passengers who will find shops closed.
According to the Chamber's calculations, considering that 53.1% of visitors make a purchase with an average spend of 21.1 euros per person, the city's commerce stands to lose 342,968.71 euros throughout the year.

"Commerce will remain closed due to the stubbornness of Mayor Rubén Viñuales, who has repeatedly rejected Tarragona being declared a tourist municipality."

Laura Roigé · President of the Tarragona Chamber of Commerce
The President of the Chamber, Laura Roigé, also used the meeting to criticize other aspects of municipal management, such as “unfulfilled promises” and the status of the Municipal Urban Planning Plan (POUM), which she does not expect to be ready before the 2027 municipal elections.
Finally, Roigé expressed the entity's concern regarding the “very neglected” state of Tarragona's industrial estates, another key point for the local economy.
