The announcement was made by the Archbishop of Tarragona, Joan Planellas, during an interview with Catalunya Ràdio, where he confirmed ongoing contacts with the regional government. This initiative involves the ten dioceses that make up the Tarraconense Episcopal Conference.
“"We are looking into whether, with the help of institutions, we can convert certain assets we have into social housing. We are working with the Generalitat to reach an agreement."
Planellas recalled that almost four years ago, the Church already enabled a former house of spirituality in La Selva del Camp to host Ukrainian refugees, mostly young mothers with children. Currently, 27 people reside there, having peaked at 80.
The Archbishop also referred to the potential visit of the Pope to Barcelona in 2026, coinciding with the centenary of the death of Antoni Gaudí. He noted that the most probable date is June 10, emphasizing that Gaudí's work, such as the Sagrada Família, cannot be understood without his spiritual trajectory.
Finally, Planellas addressed cases of child abuse within the Church, stating that, in his opinion, these crimes “should not prescribe”.
