The Local Police of Torredembarra is preparing to incorporate a future Canine Unit specialized in drug detection, a new resource to enhance citizen security.

A corporal from the force, Sergio Paños, has completed 520 hours of specialized training as a drug detection dog handler, alongside his dog. This voluntary training took place in Burgos.
The Councilor for Citizen Security, M. Carmen Martín, highlighted that "this training is another step towards making the future Canine Unit a reality, which will allow us to expand the Local Police's prevention tools and improve operational capacity in certain situations".
The training combined theoretical and practical content, preparing the handler-dog team for different environments and operational situations. The lapa marking technique was taught, a passive detection method where the dog precisely indicates the location of the substance without direct contact.
These capabilities will be useful in police checks, preventive actions in public spaces, vehicles, luggage, leisure areas, and events with high attendance. The future unit will also be able to contribute to proximity and educational/preventive tasks.
