The pacification project for La Seu d’Urgell has commenced with the renovation and redevelopment of Regència d’Urgell street, in the section between Llorenç Tomàs i Costa street and Pau Claris Avenue. This initiative will convert one of the city's main streets into a single platform, giving preference to pedestrians over vehicles.
The intervention includes the creation of wider sidewalks, a roadway with a distinctive color, significant accessibility improvements, renewal of utilities, replacement of urban furniture, energy efficiency in lighting, and an increase in green and shaded areas. This street marks the starting point for the renovation of other urban roads.
The mayor of La Seu d’Urgell, Joan Barrera, highlighted the importance of this first phase, stating, "it is a street with a lot of economic activity, also life, of people passing through it, and therefore, this will be the first phase." Barrera announced that the work will continue along Sant Ermengol street and that the "star part" of the project, within the Neighborhood Plan, will be Pau Claris Avenue and Sant Ot street, connecting the expansion area with the historic center.
Given the commercial nature of Regència d’Urgell street, the City Council has held several meetings with residents and shopkeepers to inform them about the progress of the works and potential disruptions. According to the mayor, residents will be guaranteed vehicle access in the mornings and afternoons, utilizing the numerous available parking spaces, and entry to shops will be facilitated. Barrera acknowledged that there will be inconveniences but efforts will be made to minimize them.
The works, which will last seven months, have a budget of nearly 870,000 euros, a portion of which will be subsidized by the Single Plan for Works and Services of Catalonia.
