The Tornabous City Council has presented the results of the first phase of recovering two artillery observatories located at Tossal d’Espígol. These fortifications, part of the Republican defensive line of the Canal d’Urgell and L-2, aimed to strengthen the defense of Catalonia against the Francoist advance.
Defensive works at Tossal d’Espígol began in April 1938. The preserved complex includes two armored observatories (east and west), machine-gun emplacements in concrete casemates, and remains of scattered trenches. Each observatory features a frontal niche for an observer and a rear area for transmission and firing calculation tasks, utilizing its elevated position to maximize the field of vision.
The recovery project, carried out between 2025 and 2026, has involved archaeological interventions, access improvements, heritage documentation, the creation of a small parking area, and the enhancement of the access path with interpretive signage.
According to architect Joel Ametlla, a member of the GRIEGC, the objective has been to make these observatories accessible and facilitate their historical understanding by the public.
The Councilor for Heritage and Memory, Ramon Oromí, highlighted the project's dual value: the recovery of a degraded historical site and its integration into the environment of the Serra d’Almenara i Bellmunt, within the Natura 2000 Network. He also emphasized that the space has been conceived as a point for landscape and natural observation.
The initiative received an approximate investment of 20,000 euros, with support from the Institut d’Estudis Ilerdencs (IEI).
