The new Pyrenees 27 brand aims to internationally promote the Pyrenees as a leading outdoor sports destination, extending beyond individual competitions. The event will connect various disciplines and leverage its global profile to enhance the region's standing.
Sort will kick off the calendar from June 14-19, 2027, hosting the Freestyle and Downriver whitewater World Championships. Subsequently, from September 7-12, La Seu d'Urgell will host the Slalom whitewater World Championships, encompassing both slalom and kayak cross disciplines. In total, two venues, three World Championships, and four disciplines will unite under a single identity.
The Minister of Sports, Berni Álvarez, highlighted Pyrenees 27 as "Catalonia's major sporting event of 2027," drawing parallels with events like the Tour de France and the Champions League final. He emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts for its success and underscored its economic, social, and sustainability impact for the region's future.
The mayor of Sort, Baldo Farré, stressed the event's social legacy and the significance of decentralizing major events while promoting sustainability. Meanwhile, the mayor of La Seu d'Urgell, Joan Barrera, noted that the Parc Olímpic del Segre, set to be updated, will help establish the city as a leading European sports hub.
The Spanish Government's sub-delegate in Lleida, Jose Crespín, stated the goal is to organize a top-tier competition that boosts the economic and tourism impact of the Pyrenees. The Championships' director, Martí Batalla, acknowledged they are at the starting point with significant work ahead.
La Seu d'Urgell will host the second qualifying event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in slalom and kayak cross, building on its Olympic legacy since 1992. In Sort, the Noguera Pallaresa river has been crucial for the development of whitewater sports.
Pyrenees 27 aims to enhance the Pyrenees' tourism profile, associating the region with elite and amateur sports, nature, and outdoor activities year-round.
