The gòTIC Tàrrega City Council has organized the activity 'How much does your mobile phone pollute?' at the Tàrrega Public Library, as part of the Environmental Fair, to raise awareness about the environmental and social impact of digital devices.

The activity, held on October 16th, brought together about fifteen people to analyze the lifecycle of mobile phones, from mineral extraction to the generation of electronic waste, and the material dimension of the Internet. It was highlighted that digital services like cloud storage or artificial intelligence require physical infrastructure and energy.
A key moment was a 'Mobile Environmental MOT', which assessed device usage time, protection, battery, energy and data consumption, and repair and reuse possibilities. The aim was to show how daily decisions can extend the lifespan of devices and reduce their ecological impact.
As a complement, gòTIC has launched 'What environmental footprint does your technology use leave?', a free web application that invites reflection on digital practices through 20 questions about purchasing, durability, storage, data consumption, and energy. The tool, created by Ramon Oromí Farré, suggests recommendations for more sustainable habits and allows users to make personal commitments.
This educational tool, published under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, does not calculate real CO₂ emissions but facilitates self-reflection and learning. It can be used from any browser without prior installation or registration.
Through this initiative, gòTIC reinforces its commitment to critical digital education, promoting digital sobriety, avoiding unnecessary consumption, and advocating for durability and responsible consumption.
The gòTIC's activity program will continue on Friday, October 23rd, with the online session 'Access Open Knowledge', organized for International Open Access Week, to provide information on free online resources.
