The Materials Science Institute of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) recently hosted a seminar focused on science for peace, discussing scientists' responsibility in the face of current global challenges, such as climate change and conflict management.

The conference, presented by Ekaterina Khestanova, an ICMAB researcher, featured Elies Molins, a Doctor of Physics and Research Professor at ICMAB, as well as President of the CSIC Researchers' Staff Association (API-CSIC) and Co-President of the World Federation of Scientific Workers (WFSW). The WFSW, a UNESCO partner NGO founded in 1946, aims to prevent the use of nuclear bombs against humans and promote peace.
During his presentation, Molins highlighted that while the nuclear threat remains, new challenges such as climate change and the mismanagement of conflicts are now being faced. He emphasized the need to eradicate violence and militarization, lamenting that the immense power of scientific and technological progress is often used for "less noble purposes" instead of for the peace and well-being of all.
The "illusion" of the Sustainable Development Goals was also criticized in light of the increasing perception of risks at all levels, with governance allegedly held by "blind leaders" who manipulate opinions for immediate benefit. Molins stressed the high responsibility of scientists to raise their voices and identify the "authentic guidelines" that should orient society.
The seminar, held on October 27, 2026, was followed by a debate. The WFSW, established after World War II, expresses deep concern over environmental destruction and the lack of peace and equality.
