Project VEUS aims to involve children in the fight against school bullying by equipping them with tools for conflict management and prevention. This initiative, implemented at the Sagrat Cor school in Terrassa, focuses particularly on fifth and sixth-grade students during recess, seeking to improve coexistence and well-being within the school.
The initiative seeks to change the perception that reporting injustice is being a 'snitch' or 'traitor,' valuing the act of reporting situations that do not align with the school environment. The name VEUS (VOICES) summarizes the project's essence: V eus (See) a conflict situation, E xpliques (Explain) what you saw, and thus you U neixes (Unite) in the S olution. The school aims for children to become active participants in the solution, a learning they hope will extend beyond their school years into their lives.
Participating students, identified by a yellow vest, patrol the playground during the 30-minute recess. Upon identifying a conflict, they act as mediators and record the incident on a form given to their tutor. A Mediation/VEUS mailbox has also been set up for anonymous communications. Daily rotation of the role ensures all students experience it throughout the academic year.
At the end of the school year, students and teaching staff will evaluate the project to implement improvements for the next academic term. The Sagrat Cor school emphasizes the importance of preventing bullying to ensure emotional and social well-being, creating safe spaces where children feel respected and protected.
