The party Junts per Sabadell has given the green light to a strategy for the upcoming municipal elections aimed at uniting various local political sensibilities. In an assembly held on Friday, the membership approved by 73.5% of votes to work towards forming a “broad candidacy” that would incorporate Gent de Sabadell, MesCAT, and Identitat Sabadellenca.
The leadership of the candidacy will fall to Gabriel Fernàndez, who until last September was the spokesperson for ERC in the city. Fernàndez left the Republican party due to disagreements with the leadership. "This is not about names, it's about the project; now is not the time for party politics, it's time for city and country politics," stated the local president of Junts per Sabadell, Francesc Xavier Baró.
This decision comes after a period of internal tensions. In March, the local executive asked its councillors, Lluís Matas and Katia Botta, to resign their seats due to coordination issues. The councillors threatened legal action and were subsequently temporarily suspended due to internal disagreements.
The assembly, which was attended by the Secretary General of Junts, Jordi Turull, showed support for the leadership in the conflict with the two councillors. Fernàndez, who was ERC's mayoral candidate in 2023, broke his Republican party membership card last September and is currently a non-attached councillor in the Sabadell council.
