The Government of Catalonia has decided to end the mandatory use of masks in all healthcare centers and residences in the region starting January 7, 2026, although the recommendation remains in place.

This decision, which takes immediate effect, applies to hospitals, primary care centers (CAP), and nursing homes throughout the Catalan territory. The measure had been previously implemented in response to the increase in respiratory cases during the winter.
Despite lifting the mandatory requirement, the Department of Health insists on the importance of individual responsibility. The strong recommendation to use a mask remains if the person exhibits symptoms of respiratory illnesses.

The recommendation is especially firm for those individuals who are in contact with vulnerable patients or those at high risk of complications.

The goal of the recommendation is to protect the most sensitive groups, ensuring that the end of the obligation does not lead to increased transmission in high-risk environments. The measure is constantly reviewed based on epidemiological evolution.
