Provisional data from the Institut d’Estadística de Catalunya (Idescat) for 2025 indicate a demographic trend shift in Terrassa, with 1,721 births from resident mothers by the end of the year. This figure represents a 2.3% increase compared to the previous year, with 39 more newborns, and allows the city to regain the psychological milestone of 1,700 births, lost since the late nineties.
This local increase surpasses the general trend in Catalonia, where the total number of live births (54,249) has grown by a more modest 0.8%. With a crude birth rate of 7.40 births per 1,000 inhabitants, Terrassa not only improves on last year's low (7.35) but also positions itself above the Catalan average of 6.7 births per thousand inhabitants.
The Vallès Occidental region has established itself as the second-largest in Catalonia for absolute growth in births in 2025, adding 201 more newborns. Within this context, Terrassa stands out among other major regional cities: while the city reaches 1,721 births (7.40 per 1,000 inhabitants), Sabadell records 1,645 births (7.32). Sant Cugat del Vallès has a slightly higher rate (7.46) but with fewer absolute births (731).
The city also serves as a healthcare hub, attracting mothers from neighboring municipalities thanks to the Hospital de Terrassa (Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa) and the Hospital Universitari MútuaTerrassa. The 2,137 newborns registered in the city's civil registry exceed by 416 those born to mothers registered in Terrassa.
The age of motherhood continues to be postponed, with a central age between 34 and 35 years, accounting for 14.3% of births. 8.6% of mothers are 40 years or older, nearly triple the figure from 2008 (2.9%), when the historical peak of 3,100 births was recorded.
The city's demographic transformation is evident in the mothers' origins. In 2000, foreign mothers accounted for just 6.1% (125 newborns), whereas today they represent 31.3% (538 newborns). Considering the mother's actual place of birth, 44.3% were born outside Spain, predominantly from Africa (20.2%) and South America (14.7%). Mothers born in Catalonia still form the simple majority at 51.8% (892 births).
The family model has also diversified. In 2025, 54.6% of births (939 cases) are from couples with a marital bond, while single mothers or de facto partnerships account for the remaining 45.4% (781 cases), a significant increase from the 17% in 2000.
Regarding family diversification, heterosexual couples represent 95.3% of births (1,640 cases). In just one year, births from female homoparental couples have doubled (from 10 to 20 cases in 2025), and births where a second parent is not registered have grown by a notable 27% (61 children).
Regarding newborn health, 86% of babies in Terrassa are born with a healthy weight (between 2.5 and 4 kilograms). The most common weight range is between 3,000 and 3,499 grams (674 newborns). Low birth weight cases (below 2.5 kg) accounted for 7.7% (132 babies), and macrosomic babies (over 4 kg) represented 6.1% (105 babies), with a majority of boys (61) compared to girls (44).
