Around a hundred people gathered this Tuesday outside the Territorial Services of Education in Vallès Occidental, on Marquès de Comillas street, to protest against the closure of lines in public schools. The mobilization included families and teachers from various centers in the region affected by this decision from the Department. Participants briefly blocked the Gran Via to make their demands heard.
The protest, called by the Federated Associations of Student Families of Catalonia (aFFaC), began around five in the afternoon with whistles and chants in favor of public education. Demonstrators chanted slogans such as 'united families, protected school' or 'there are no fewer children, there are fewer resources'. Banners were also displayed, calling for the non-elimination of early childhood education groups: 'don't close groups, open opportunities!'.
One of the affected schools is the Municipal School La Sínia in Cerdanyola del Vallès. The president of its families' association has denounced that the measure exacerbates segregation and lack of opportunities, as many parents are pushed towards private-funded schools due to the limited public options. "They tell us there aren't enough children, but what's really lacking are resources for public schools," she insisted.
There was also a significant representation from the educational community of the Taula Rodona School in Sant Quirze del Vallès and other centers affected by the reduction of I3 lines. The demonstration also called for reduced class sizes and improved educational facilities, alongside quality inclusive education. Several families and teachers from Sabadell participated, particularly from centers experiencing issues with temporary classrooms and lack of air conditioning.
These events occur one day before the final lists are published and amidst months of teacher mobilization, who continue to demand urgent improvements in the educational system and their working conditions. USTEC, CGT, CNT, COS, and Intersindical are organizing a large-scale demonstration on June 14th in Barcelona, which a contingent from aFFaC will join to support the teachers' demands.
