The Sabadell council is resuming the initiative to renew this section of the street, located between Plaça d’Espanya and Avinguda de Matadepera. This will be the second time the works are put out to tender, as the initially awarded company withdrew from executing the project.
According to the City Council, the intervention will affect an area of approximately 4,500 square meters. Improvements will include the complete renovation of the pavement, the adaptation of stairs and ramps to enhance accessibility, and the modification of flowerbeds to widen sidewalks and facilitate pedestrian flow. A new section of bike lane will also be created, connecting to Plaça d’Espanya, Avinguda de la Concòrdia, and the bike lane on Antoni Forrellad street.
Regarding vegetation, the renewal of existing plants and the planting of about fifteen new trees are planned, along with lawn areas and the installation of an automatic irrigation system. The project also includes new urban furniture, such as benches, bins, and bike racks, as well as improved street lighting.
This action is part of a dozen initiatives carried out in recent years to transform the Gran Via. Completed works include the widening of pedestrian crossings in front of Parc Taulí, the renovation of Antoni Forrellad street with a new bike lane, the redevelopment of the public space in front of Artèxtil, the transformation of the blue zone on Estació street into a square, the renovation of the small square on Calassanç Duran street, the access to the crematorium on Ronda d'Orient, and the reform of the intersection of Rambla with Gran Via.
The spokesperson for the municipal government, Eloi Cortés, recalled that this project and other Gran Via actions were initially promoted by Junts when it was part of the local executive.
Currently, the only pending project within this initiative is the renovation of the area around Fira Sabadell.
