The Area of Climate Action and Energy Transition of the Barcelona Provincial Council has sent a letter of recognition to the Santa Perpètua council for the good results obtained with the new waste collection system. Selective collection has increased from 40% to 80%, a milestone that places the municipality among large towns with the best results, exceeding the Catalan average of 47.1% recorded in 2024 and meeting the regulatory objective for 2025.
According to the Area's president, Marc Serra, 80% of citizens recycle correctly and comply with the established contributions. Furthermore, 75% of families will see their waste tax reduced this year thanks to the system's effective operation.
Serra highlighted that waste management and the improvement of selective collection are "one of the main priorities in the area of municipal sustainability." He emphasized that moving towards more efficient models that increase recycling and promote citizen responsibility is a shared challenge requiring commitment and perseverance, and that it is part of a new regulatory framework with "increasingly ambitious objectives for prevention, reuse, and recycling".
The implementation of the closed container model has been "a demanding process," according to Serra, requiring adaptation, determination, and citizen involvement. He recalled that this system has been implemented in over 430 municipalities and that Santa Perpètua also participates in the Intermunicipal Comparison Circle for Waste Management and Street Cleaning of the Barcelona Provincial Council, a space for exchange and continuous improvement.
