The Santa Perpètua City Council has joined the commemoration of World Breast Cancer Day, celebrated today, October 19th, with the aim of raising awareness about the risk this disease poses to all women. As part of the initiative, a large pink ribbon has been placed on the facade of the Town Hall. Additionally, sculptures at the various entrances to the municipality and the clock on the Town Hall facade will be illuminated in pink.
According to data from the Spanish Association Against Cancer, it is estimated that over 38,000 cases will be diagnosed in Spain this year, of which approximately 4,000 will affect women between 0 and 44 years old. Breast cancer accounts for one in four cancer cases among women and is responsible for one in six deaths from this disease.
Survival rates have significantly improved in recent decades, exceeding 87.8% five years after diagnosis. These advancements are due to screening programs and the availability of more effective and personalized treatments. These treatments often require a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy, depending on the type and stage of the tumor.
In Spain, over 500,000 women currently live with breast cancer.
