The project, driven by the municipal libraries of Vallès Oriental, aims to disseminate knowledge of local seed varieties, encourage their cultivation and consumption, and contribute to their preservation. It also seeks to build community around this practice.
Participants in the seed lending program will receive a packet of selected local seed varieties at the library, along with specific sowing and cultivation instructions, a practical guide for seed conservation and production, and an explanatory leaflet on the project's operation.
A key value of this initiative is the preservation of local varieties. Therefore, after the harvest, participants are asked to return a portion of the new seeds to the library to ensure the project's continuity.
This initiative is part of the De l’Hort a la Biblioteca (From the Garden to the Library) program by the Diputació de Barcelona, launched in 2017, which promotes knowledge of the territory and agricultural heritage with a close and participatory approach.
Through the Seed Library, libraries reinforce their role as spaces for meeting, learning, and community building, offering a lending service that highlights the biodiversity of the Vallès Oriental.
