Renfe has launched an ambitious 163.7 million euro investment plan to modernize and expand its train maintenance workshop network in Catalonia, aiming to double current capacity and improve Rodalies service.

The project includes the construction of three new workshops in Manresa, Sant Celoni, and Granollers, as well as the expansion of existing facilities in Vilanova i la Geltrú, Sant Andreu Comtal, and Ripoll. These works, extending until 2030, represent the company's largest investment in workshops in nearly five decades.
Works have already begun in Ripoll, where the new facilities are expected to be operational by the end of the year. Here, Renfe will build a definitive workshop with capacity for five 100-meter wagons, with an investment of 16.6 million euros. This workshop will replace a provisional installation created during the doubling works of the R3 line.
In Vilanova i la Geltrú, home to Renfe's main workshop in Catalonia, 22.6 million euros will be allocated to modernize the facilities. This upgrade will include increasing the length of one of the sheds and constructing a new conventional gauge workshop with three tracks, with completion expected by 2027. This will increase the number of work lines from six to nine, ready for the new Rodalies 452 trains, which are anticipated to be in circulation by early 2027.
The new Manresa workshops, with a budget of 40 million euros, will be in service by 2029 and will feature six repair tracks. In Sant Celoni, the investment will be approximately 25 million euros for a four-track workshop, projected for the 2028-2030 period. Finally, the Granollers workshop, with 40 million euros, will be the largest budget item and will have eight tracks for wagon repair, equipped with advanced industrial equipment.
These actions will allow Renfe to increase its maintenance capacity from 22 to 51 wagons simultaneously, aiming to achieve the goal of having workshops on all Rodalies lines. The company assures that, although between 10% and 15% of the fleet is undergoing maintenance, this does not affect daily service operations, as an additional 5% of trains are reserved for potential incidents.
In addition to the announced investments, Renfe is also studying new facilities in Mataró, Blanes, Sant Vicenç de Calders, and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, with an estimated additional 150 million euros, although these projects are still in the study phase.
