The Municipal Theatre Hall hosted on Thursday, October 22nd, the first information session on the new system, which will combine smart closed containers and recycling stations with access via an electronic key fob. Mayor Jan Santaló highlighted the need to update the current obsolete model, with a selective collection rate of 40%, far from European targets.
The Councillor for Environment, Pol Oliveras, detailed that the new model will feature 82 recycling areas distributed throughout the municipality, all equipped with the five standard waste fractions. These new areas will have video surveillance to prevent uncivil behavior, and the containers will be designed to prevent wild boars from tipping them over. Currently, only 52 points have containers for all fractions.
Citizen participation is key to this process. The Town Council has launched the website www.ametlla.cat/reciclem, where residents can consult the planned locations of future points, propose changes, and submit queries. A 24-hour incident support service will also be available during the rollout.
The implementation will occur in phases: the installation of containers will begin in November 2026 and continue until February 2027. The construction of recycling stations will take place between December 2026 and April 2027. The distribution of electronic key fobs and information on their use will be carried out between May and June 2027, with the activation of the new access system scheduled for July and September 2027.
