A polar cold air mass and an Atlantic low-pressure system will cause a storm of rain, snow, and wind starting Friday, affecting much of Catalonia, with risk of a major coastal storm early next week.

After several days of calm, the meteorological situation is expected to become significantly complicated by the end of the week in January 2026. The arrival of a cold air mass of polar origin, combined with the formation of an Atlantic low and a Mediterranean low, will generate marked instability lasting until at least Tuesday or Wednesday.

"Meteocat has issued a pre-alert for accumulations of more than 100 l/m² in just 24 hours in the coastal, pre-coastal areas, and the eastern half of the country, and for rough seas, between Sunday and Tuesday."

The first changes are expected on Friday with weak and scattered showers, especially in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. However, the weekend will see generalized rainfall across the country, with precipitation moving from sea to land starting Saturday afternoon. The snow level will be between 1,300 and 1,500 meters, potentially accumulating more than 25 or 30 cm of new snow at high altitudes.
The most critical situation could arrive early next week with the formation of a Mediterranean low, causing a major easterly storm (llevantada). Very heavy rainfall is forecast between Monday and Wednesday, especially in the regions of Barcelona and Girona, where totals could exceed 150 or 200 l/m² throughout the episode.
This situation will be accompanied by strong easterly and northeasterly winds, waves of 4 to 6 meters, and significant snowfall in the Eastern Pyrenees, with depths potentially reaching one meter of new snow in areas like Ripollès and Cerdanya.
