The multinational International Paper has extended the negotiation period with workers in Valls and Montblanc until March 25 to study a potential takeover bid from Cristian Lay.

The future of the Valls and Montblanc production sites, which employ 200 people, remains uncertain but hopeful. While International Paper originally planned to shut down operations, the company is now open to a sale. They have requested Cristian Lay to submit a formal binding offer by this Thursday for further evaluation.

"We see this as a positive step because, until now, we hadn't heard anything about a potential purchase."

Negotiations are set to resume on March 24. The Generalitat de Catalunya has expressed its commitment to the reindustrialization of the region, supporting the extension of the consultation period to avoid the definitive closure of these key industrial assets in the Alt Camp and Conca de Barberà districts.
