The industrial holding Cristian Lay is evaluating the purchase of International Paper – DS Smith plants in Valls and Montblanc, as 200 employees begin an indefinite strike to prevent the site's closure.

The group, based in Extremadura, already operates in the region through the Matías Gomà Tomàs paper mill in la Riba. This potential acquisition could halt the redundancy proceedings (ERE) recently initiated by the current multinational owners.
Workers gathered today at Plaça Imperial Tarraco in Tarragona to protest the shutdown. The labor force is demanding a viable future for the factories, which are key industrial assets for the Alt Camp and Conca de Barberà regions.
