Employees at International Paper in Valls and Montblanc launched an indefinite strike this Tuesday, February 24, to protest the company's decision to shut down both production sites.

Approximately 150 workers marched through Tarragona, from Imperial Tarraco Square to the Torreforta neighborhood, where management and union representatives met to discuss the ERE (Employment Regulation File). The closure, scheduled to begin on March 19, threatens the livelihoods of 174 staff members.

"They want to eliminate competition, create demand, and raise prices."

Albert Queralt · Valls Works Committee President
The workers' committee claims there are four potential buyers interested in the facilities, including the Cristian Lay group. However, they accuse the multinational of refusing to sell in order to limit market competition, despite the mayor of Valls, Dolors Farre, joining the protests in support of the local industry.
