The agreement, valid for four years, establishes a shared work framework to promote the restoration of river ecosystems, ecological monitoring, and citizen involvement in this section of the river and its tributary streams. The agreement culminates a joint working process among territorial stakeholders to protect the area's natural values.
The scope of action covers the public hydraulic domain of the Muga from its source to the tail of the Darnius-Boadella reservoir, including various streams such as La Parada, La de la Costa, El Clot de Putins, El Riu Major, the Riera d’en Parada, and El Clot de Taquinell. This area already has several environmental protection designations, such as the Muga Headwaters River Natural Reserve and the Natura 2000 Network.
River stewardship allows for the establishment of common objectives and the continuity of collaboration to conserve and improve aquatic ecosystems. The agreement plans to coordinate conservation, restoration, ecological monitoring, research, dissemination, and awareness-raising activities, with an action plan developed from participatory workshops involving thirteen organizations.
The agreement also aims to bring the river closer to citizens and raise awareness of its natural values through dissemination and sensitization. Collaboration among administrations, entities, landowners, and river users consolidates a shared workspace for the protection of the Muga headwaters.
