The sanitation operation, carried out by the Figueres City Council between Wednesday, February 4, and Friday, February 6, involves the removal of 45 pine trees in the pine forest of Pujada del Castell. This measure is taken to prevent risks and ensure pedestrian safety.
Of the felled specimens, 40 were completely dead and five posed an imminent risk of falling. Municipal technicians determined that the planting density, with the pines too close together, causes excessive competition for nutrients, which weakens and kills some trees.
The pine forest of Pujada del Castell, which has 541 pines in total, sees 8.3% of its trees affected. Most of the felled pines (42) are located next to the municipal nursery Els Pins, and the remaining three are near the Albert Gurt Stadium.
This emergency situation is due to the combination of three years of extreme drought and the latest rainfall episodes, which have severely affected the health of the trees. The wood obtained from this felling will be used as biomass.
Simultaneously, the Parc Bosc in Figueres has also suffered the consequences of this weakness, with the recent fall of eight trees. Technical services are preparing a report to assess the general condition of the rest of the park's forest mass.
