The Ministry of Transport detected a fissure on the Madrid-Figueres high-speed line near L'Espluga de Francolí, implementing a temporary speed limit of 80 km/h.

The Ministry of Transport confirmed the detection of a fissure on the high-speed line connecting Madrid with Figueres, specifically near L'Espluga de Francolí, in the province of Tarragona. This incident has forced the establishment of a temporary speed restriction of 80 kilometers per hour on this section.

"The network is safe and has the appropriate controls."

Óscar Puente · Minister of Transport
The detection occurred after a train driver reported an incident on the track “last night”. Adif immediately mobilized its maintenance teams to inspect the facilities and carry out initial rail repair interventions, keeping circulation reduced while the work is completed.
The appearance of this fissure, which the department insists is a “fissure” and not a “rupture,” increases concern over the safety of high-speed tracks in Spain. This tension has intensified following the tragic accident that recently occurred on the Madrid to Seville line, near Adamuz, which resulted in 45 fatalities.
The preliminary report prepared by the Railway Accident Investigation Commission (CIAF) attributes, as the main line of inquiry, the rupture of a track as the primary cause of the accident in Adamuz.
