Civil Protection activated the VENTCAT emergency plan this Wednesday due to a forecast of severe windstorms affecting Alt Empordà and much of Catalonia with high-speed gusts.

According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat), the wind will intensify starting Thursday morning. While the northeast is mostly excluded from the main front, Alt Empordà will still experience significant western winds, with some areas in the south reaching speeds of 125 kilometers per hour.

"We call for prudence in the face of these new winds and remind that many trees are unstable after repeated episodes of rain and wind."

Authorities advise citizens to secure loose items on balconies, avoid parks or wooded areas, and stay away from unstable walls. The risk is expected to subside by Friday morning after affecting the northern third of the country.
