The project, which involved an investment of 700,000 euros from European Next Generation funds, allows for the recovery of an area that historically formed part of a large pond in the municipality. The work was adapted to ensure sustainability in the face of drought episodes, incorporating a pipeline that supplies water from the Empuriabrava treatment plant.
The space, which covers an area of nine hectares, includes facilities for bird watching and shelters for bats. According to municipal forecasts, the pond will reach its optimal depth within 40 to 50 days, with the goal of being fully operational by autumn.
This initiative has a dual purpose: on one hand, to act as a tourist attraction to revitalize the historic center and, on the other, to enhance the environmental aspect. It is expected that the presence of reclaimed water, rich in nutrients, will facilitate the establishment of various species of amphibians, dragonflies, and native birds.
