The 34th edition of the Terra de Trobadors festival will be held in Castelló d’Empúries from September 11th to 13th. This year, the event pays tribute to Guillem Escarrer (1266-1321), a historical figure linked to the municipality who had a significant career in the service of the Crown of Aragon. His life and work will be the central theme of the various programmed activities.
The festival places a special emphasis on historical rigor and research, aspects reinforced by the second edition of the Beca d’Estudis Medievals (Medieval Studies Scholarship). This scholarship has enabled the recovery and dissemination of Guillem Escarrer's figure, deepening the understanding of the municipality's medieval past.
The Mayor of Castelló d’Empúries, Anna Massot, highlighted the festival's consolidation and its connection with the community, emphasizing the participation of residents and local entities. She stressed the commitment to continuously improve historical accuracy, as demonstrated by the scholarship, and to present history in an engaging way for both locals and visitors.
The Councillor for Culture and Heritage, Josep Maria Gironella, focused on the figure of Guillem Escarrer and the research undertaken. The Beca d’Estudis Medievals is consolidating as a cornerstone of the festival, influencing the program with the presentation of a book dedicated to Escarrer and the original production of the Romanç de Guillem Escarrer, a music and theater performance.
As a new feature, the festival will commence before the official dates with the preview of the Romanç de Guillem Escarrer on August 30th, an original production designed to introduce the protagonist to the public through a scenic language.
The coordinator of shows, Xènia Gasull, presented the program, which includes 80 stalls and 12 taverns at the medieval market, featuring a 'platillos' (tapas) contest. There will also be a recreation camp, craft demonstrations, and pottery workshops, in addition to the traditional opening and closing shows, the Medieval Dinner, and musical performances.
Other novelties this year include a podcast series to promote medieval history and heritage, and shows related to war machines and flag acrobatics exhibitions.
The Terra de Trobadors continues to combine historical reenactment, culture, dissemination, and citizen participation, aiming to make the medieval heritage of Castelló d’Empúries accessible and attractive.
