The Catalan Health Department plans to extend the colorectal cancer screening program to include citizens up to 74 years old, a move pending the approval of the 2026 Budget.

This expansion will increase the eligible population by 30%. Currently, the program targets individuals aged 50 to 69. The announcement took place at Hospital del Mar in Barcelona during the 15th anniversary of the local screening initiative.

"We have detected nearly 2,000 cases of colorectal cancer and 20,000 polyps that would have likely become cancer."

Medical experts emphasize that while 80% of women participate in breast cancer screening, only 50% of the population joins the colon cancer tests. The European Union standard requires a minimum participation rate of 65%.
