The entity Stop Macro Parc Eòlic Marí has described the State's endorsement of the Plemcat test platform, planned for Roses (Alt Empordà), as a "barbarity" and a "mess." The group's spokesperson, Jordi Ponjoan, expresses doubts about the favorable environmental impact assessment (DIA), citing a study that warned of harm to 135 vulnerable species from the wind turbines.
Ponjoan emphasizes that there is still room to halt the project, through both administrative and judicial channels. Meanwhile, the director of the Catalan Institute for Energy Research (IREC), Jordi Puigcorbé, details that the DIA includes "demanding" yet "manageable" measures that reinforce the Plemcat's objective: "To sustainably develop offshore wind energy in our region."
The favorable environmental declaration represents a key administrative step for the project, promoted by IREC, which plans to install three wind turbines as a precursor to future commercial parks. The opposing entity, Stop Macro Parc Eòlic Marí, deems the decision a "barbarity" and a "mess," particularly as a study by the UdG, UPC, and ICM-CSIC warned of the impact on 135 vulnerable species in the Gulf of Roses.
Puigcorbé applauded the approval from the Ministry for Ecological Transition, highlighting that the DIA is accompanied by "demanding" yet "manageable" environmental measures covering both the construction and operation of the platform. These align with the project's pioneering nature and its goal of promoting sustainable offshore wind in Catalonia through research.
Despite the favorable DIA, Ponjoan believes there is still scope to stop the Plemcat and future commercial parks. The entity awaits the resolution of objections to the Maritime Spatial Planning (POEM) and is confident in using administrative and judicial avenues to halt the project, which it views as a "long battle" that will substantially affect the natural space.
