The managing company, Actiescola-Terramar, has expanded the electric vehicle fleet at Castell de Sant Ferran in Figueres to enhance visitor experiences. Six two-seater electric quads, named "Mules", five quadricycles called "Tartanes", and three electric boats have been added. These join the existing four 25-seater electric buses, known as "Matxos".
According to Xavier Camps and Alfons Martín, service managers, the goal is to "facilitate visitor movement within the Castle", emphasizing its status as Europe's largest bastion fortress with significant distances between sections. The quads, with limited motor power, will also serve for interpretive tours, explaining the Castle's history and its connection to the Empordà landscape.
This mobility upgrade is part of an investment nearing 100,000 euros since the concessionaire took over management. The investment covers vehicles, equipment, and infrastructure, including a new staircase to access the large underground cisterns. The tour offerings include self-guided routes, guided walking tours, the "Cathedral of Water" with pneumatic boats, and moat tours using electric vehicles with specialized guides.
The "Bus Castell", a pilot project by the Figueres City Council, also enhances accessibility by connecting the Rambla with the Castle entrance until August 23rd. This service, with a nominal fee, aims for future viability and to ease the ascent from the city center.
The intense heat this summer has impacted visitor numbers, but the expansion of nocturnal cultural activities with the "Nits d'Art al Castell" cycle is viewed positively. Collaboration with the Consorci aims to promote the monument as a key tourist and cultural attraction for the city.
