The challenge involves identifying the maximum number of Catalan municipalities within a set timeframe. While the concept of geography games isn't new globally, the Catalan version, driven by Arnau Font, known on social media as @senyorfont, has achieved unexpected popularity.
In just fifteen days since its launch, the game has recorded over 25,000 games played and exceeds 2,000 hours of activity. The creator has expressed surprise at its success, as he initially envisioned it as a mere pastime.
“"I thought it would just be a pastime, a matter of minutes, and I see that people are taking it very, very seriously."
The project, named 'els947.cat', has evolved beyond its initial classic mode. Font has introduced new features such as a daily mode with variable challenges (guessing towns by silhouette or distance clues), a timed map location mode, and an expanded version covering the Catalan Countries.
The creator emphasizes the importance of user suggestions received via Twitter for the game's continuous development. Currently, it is accessible through the website 'els947.cat' and an iPhone app, with an Android version in development.
Beyond entertainment, Font aims to create a more comprehensive Catalan geography application, including a 'travel passport' to discover cultural points of interest and log visited places.
Regarding curiosities, the most recalled municipalities by users are Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida, and Girona. Font notes his surprise that even the smallest municipalities have been mentioned at least once, hoping the game will help uncover lesser-known locations.
Let's see if, thanks to this game, we start discovering the lesser-known municipalities.
Paradoxically, Font, despite his passion for the subject, confessed to failing geography in secondary school due to exam anxiety.
