Figueres Bus Station Relocation to Carrer Progrés Sparks Debate on Intermodality

The City Council argues that the new location, linked to the railway project, will not result in the loss of high-speed rail connection.

The Figueres City Council confirmed the relocation of the current bus station from Carrer Joan Reglà to the end of Carrer Progrés, a move linked to the future development of the Figueres-Vilafant Intermodal Station.

The reorganization of transport in Figueres is motivated by the railway project, which includes the variant and the remodeling of the Figueres-Vilafant high-speed station. The current bus station will be suppressed to build a new one on Adif land, at the end of Carrer Progrés. This new station would connect with a bus stop in the western area, near the intermodal hub.
This issue was debated in the municipal plenary session on January 8. The Mayor of Figueres, Jordi Masquef, explained that the new model must be compatible with a satellite station that guarantees intermodality with the western area of the city.

"Intermodality will not be lost, neither with bus nor with train; the station will vascularize from west to east."

Councilor Xavier Colomer questioned this guarantee, arguing that true intermodality requires all stations (including the bus station) to coexist in the same space, criticizing the loss of the central Figueres station.
The Minister of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, Sílvia Paneque, had already addressed the issue in the Parliament on December 15. She confirmed that the collaboration protocol signed in July is strictly railway-focused, but it will require reinforcing bus intermodality at the Figueres-Vilafant station and agreeing with the Figueres City Council on the construction or remodeling of a new station.
