The City Council of Figueres, the Department of Education, and the management of the Salvador Dalí school have jointly announced that students will start the 2026-2027 school year at other educational centers in the city. This provisional measure will be in place while technical tests are conducted to assess the condition of the buildings following the partial collapse of the gymnasium roof on July 30th.
Although the gymnasium is in a separate building from the rest of the school complex, authorities have opted for "maximum prudence and prevention." Diagnostic tests and potential necessary interventions make coexistence impossible during this period. The host schools are yet to be confirmed.
Initial technical reports suggest that the gymnasium collapse may be due to "material fatigue." The incident occurred outside of school hours and caused no injuries. Participants in summer camps using the facilities were relocated to other centers.
The main concern now is to determine if this structural issue could affect other buildings within the school. Exhaustive tests have begun, expected to last several weeks, which will determine the need for and scope of any repair work.
The relocation of students is based on a precautionary principle, as no structural problems have been detected in the rest of the school so far. Administrations have emphasized to families that the safety of the children is the top priority.
The City Council, Education Department, and school management acknowledge the inconvenience this exceptional measure may cause many families and apologize for it. They are working to define student distribution and organize transportation to ensure an orderly start to the school year.
Families will receive details about the relocation and the conclusions of the technical reports. All three parties commit to maintaining "constant and transparent communication" with the educational community.
