An exceptional storm surge hit the Empordà coast on January 20, 2026, causing flooding and significant damage to the seafront promenades in Begur, Tamariu, Llançà, and Roses.

The storm, which peaked on January 20, 2026, left images of destruction in several key points along the Girona coastline. The towns of Begur and Tamariu, in the Baix Empordà region, were among the most affected by the wave impact, which swallowed stretches of beach and damaged infrastructure.
The effects of the storm were also strongly felt in the Alt Empordà, especially in Llançà and Roses, where water invaded urban areas close to the sea. These coastal towns had to activate emergency protocols to manage the material damage caused by the combination of wind, rain, and rough seas.

The episode of rain and wind generally affected the entire maritime facade of the province of Girona, from Alt Empordà to Baix Empordà.

Further south, the situation was replicated in other Baix Empordà municipalities, such as Sant Antoni de Calonge and Platja d'Aro, where videos showed the seafront promenades completely flooded. Inland, the storm caused a considerable increase in the flow of the Onyar River as it passed through Girona, although no immediate serious overflows were reported.
